West Chester University
Wells School of Music Flute Studio

West Chester University’s (WCU) Flute Studio — Wells Flutes — is a vibrant community of undergraduate and graduate flutists pursuing degrees in music education, performance, music therapy, composition, and studio composition. Each student brings their own unique skills and interests to the group, creating a rich and supportive learning environment. Students receive a weekly private lesson with Dr. Reighley specifically taylored to the individual needs of the student (60 minutes for music education & performance majors; 30 minutes for music therapy, composition, and studio composition majors). Performance majors are offered minor lessons in piccolo, baroque flute, and low flutes, and all students have the opportunity to take flute literature and pedagogy classes taught by Dr. Reighley. All members of the studio perform in a studio recital each semester and have the opportunity to perform a senior/graduate recital (required for performance and music education majors).

The studio meets weekly for a group masterclass. This studio class is a performance extension of private lessons. Students have the opportunity to perform for the group and learn how to positively critique one another as well as give and recieve constructive criticism. Pedagogical, stylistic, and historical topics are discussed, and guest artists are invited to work with the students. Past guests have included Amy Porter, Nicola Mazzanti, Erica Peel, Patrica George, and Berten D’Hollander. The studio co-hosts a Flute Fair each spring with the Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia (FSGP). The one-day event features masterclasses, performances, workshops, and solo artist competitions.

The Trilovati Flute Ensemble rehearses and performs a concert at WCU each semester and have performed at regional conferences including the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention. Students refine their chamber music skills in both the large ensemble and small chamber ensembles. Additionally, students have the opportunity to perform with WSOM’s large concert ensembles including the orchestra, wind ensemble, wind symphony, and concert band.

Members of the flute studio are frequent winners of WSOM’s performance scholarship competitions and have placed in the MTNA and FSGP collegiate young artist competitions. They have been accepted to prestigious graduate schools of music and achieved successful careers as music teachers, performers, and composers.

“Dr. Reighley is an exceptional teacher and mentor whose guidance during my undergraduate studies combined deep musical knowledge with genuine warmth and support. Her teaching has been foundational to who I've become as both a flutist and educator, and I continue to draw from her teachings in my own musical work. "

“Dr. Reghley wasn’t just my teacher, she was a mentor who believed in me, pushed me to grow, and inspired the musician I’ve become. Her guidance shaped me in ways that extend far beyond music, and I feel incredibly grateful to still call
her a mentor as well as a
friend and colleague.”
